France-IX Tour Lyon: meshing the Internet the way we mesh the people who run it

Last week, we were in Lyon for an event dedicated to Internet players.

The France-IX Tour is a moment when network people get together, talk and decide to build together.

Just as we mesh the Internet to make it more resilient, we mesh the people who keep it running.

That is what makes the French Internet stronger: interconnecting, sharing resources, pooling resources, not centralising everything… That is collective intelligence at the scale of a network.

At its core, the message was simple: meshing the country cannot be done in silos.

It is a call to the other national IXPs to cooperate, because we all have every interest in interconnecting rather than each reinventing the wheel.

The vision even broadened internationally, with our Spanish counterpart from Espanix, Amedeo Beck Peccoz, who came all the way to Lyon especially for the occasion.

We also lifted the veil on a figure we had never shared publicly: customers who activate Multipass (the service that lets you reach peers in other cities from your own city, at no extra cost) can access 15 to 20% additional traffic.

The Internet is not the Minitel: it does not hold together thanks to a central hub, but because thousands of players have chosen to interconnect.
