On Monday 14 September at 9.30am, Franck Simon takes the floor at the European Peering Forum in Paris. The topic: why consolidation is the worst scenario for the Internet.

Every year, the European Peering Forum brings together the key players in Internet interconnection from Europe and beyond.

This year, it is being held in Paris, and France-IX is speaking during the opening morning.

The thesis is counter-intuitive in a sector that talks more and more about consolidation: mesh the Internet, don’t consolidate it.

Because there is a scenario quietly taking shape in the peering ecosystem: concentration, with an Internet that looks more and more like a centralised infrastructure.

Yet what makes the Internet strong is meshing, rather than merging or buying out.

We demonstrated it in France first: Multipass lets our customers reach the entire France-IX network from a single port (Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Paris, Toulouse) without a local connection in each city.

The same logic now extends to the IXPs meshing mainland France, with the aim of exchanging routes and communities while leaving each player independent.

And now beyond borders as well.

Cooperative interconnection is built as a community, or several. If you are in Paris on 14, 15 and 16 September, come and talk about it.
